Friends of Bagatelle and Environs

Friends of Bagatelle are people from around the world who have embraced the citizens of Bagatelle, Jamaica and the surrounding districts of Darlow, Ashley, Amity Hall and Rock as their friends and who are committed in helping these communities build a new school and to provide schools in the area with school supplies for both teachers and students.

Bagatelle and the surrounding districts are located near the center of the island. Bagatelle is nine and a half miles from May Pen, the capital of Clarendon and sits on the southern slopes of The Mocho Mountains.

Bagatelle Basic School was founded by the late Granville Washington George Anderson in 1934. Then it was a private school for all ages. Both children and adults attended. The school was popularly known as "Uncle Grannie's School" because Granville Anderson was affectionately called "Uncle Grannie" by the people of Bagatelle and adjoining districts. In 1938 Mavis Atkins joined the staff and later became the wife of Granville Anderson.

In 1945 the school started catering to children from four to seven years only. After the death of Granville Anderson in 1961, Mavis Anderson continued the school. Most of the people in Bagatelle and surrounding areas have benefited from the school. It is a civic center where members of the community meet for various activities.
